The Mari Lwyd is an ancient Welsh tradition where a life size puppet based on the skull of a horse is paraded through towns and villages to welcome the New Year (Hen Galan). We’ll have a visit from a local Mari Lwyd, the Mari Madarch Abertawe, and we’ll be using her as a model as well as using photographic source materials.
This 2-day course will take you through drawing the Mari Lwyd, preparing a design from your drawings, transferring it to a vinyl block and carving it. Then we’ll print up the blocks using three different techniques – single colour, rainbow roll and chine collé.
At the end of the course you should have a carved block and several prints using archival quality paper and inks. You can continue to print from your block at leisure, it should give you many more images, just in time for Christmas and the New Year.
Some knowledge of technique useful but not essential.
Packed lunches, aprons or old clothing, safety shoes / boots are recommended.
About the Artist
Rosie Scribblah aka Rose Davies is an Artist, Educator and Blogger. She works directly from life: “carrying a sketchbook at all times looking for any opportunity to have a scribble”. And she is a printmaker and occasionally a painter. She works on the streets, in public – indoors and outdoors, bringing the practice of art directly to people who may never have been into a gallery or seen art being created. Sometimes her sketchbook drawings become the basis for printmaking work, monotypes, screenprints, drypoints…
Rosie exhibits and works nationally and internationally and has carried out artists residencies in the USA and Pakistan as well as Wales.
She works from her studio in Swansea where she lives with her partner and their cats, Sparta Puss and William ChatNoir. She has a Masters in Adult Education, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, and a Diploma in Art from Swansea Art College.
