Aeronwy Thomas launched the opening exhibition of the prints at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea in 2003. Each box set contains a Colophon signed by Aeronwy Thomas together with folio pages and the poem printed in full. The limited edition (of 100) box set is custom-made with embossed motifs of Dylan Thomas’ signature. The handcrafted box is tejo green with embossed copper lettering and cinnamon lining, made at the Fine Bindery, Northampton.

Specially commissioned paper

The paper is acid-free cotton paper, commissioned from the Wookey Hole Papermill, Somerset, with the paper moulds supplied by Aimes & Son Ltd., Coxheath, Kent. The paper weighs 425 gsm and carries the watermarks SPW and GAA, abbreviations for the Swansea Print Workshop and its Welsh name Gweithdy Argraffu Abertawe.

Our beautifully decorated Colombian Press has been in continuous use since 1853. The large Radcliffe Etching Press dates from around 1920 and has a prestigious history of printmakers when it was based in Chelsea College of Art, Lodon until it was brought to Swansea Print Workshop in 1998.

 

The prints are accompanied by a detailed bi-lingual (Welsh-English) exhibition catalogue which is also available for sale separately. A beautifully designed publication which contains a reproduction of each print along with a profile of the artist and comments behind their image; an essay, ‘That Momentary Peace’ by the writer, poet and translator, Malcolm Parr, in which he explores the links between genius, imagination and the written word.

Printed on silk coated paper weighing 150 gm2.The cover is in Colorme Blanc Natural paper, weighing 300gm2. It was designed by Tony Ridler of Ridler Webster Ltd. The bound pages measure 21 cm x 23 cm.

Touring Exhibition

Following a preview show at the Welsh Assembly’s Wales Week in the Theatre du Residence Palace, Brussels, an exhibition of the prints was launched by Aeronwy Thomas, Dylan Thomas’s daughter in 2003 at the Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea.

Further exhibitions followed throughout Wales, including the National Eisteddfod in Meifod in August 2003 and The National Library of Wales in January 2004 and was on display in Hay as part of that year’s Hay Festival of Literature.

The set was selected for display by the Welsh Assembly Government in their newly opened offices in The Chrysler Building, New York, USA. The prints were on display for one year and were featured as part of the St David’s Day celebrations in New York City in March 2004.

More recently, in 2007, as part of a cultural exchange, the prints were exhibited in Alhambra Arts Centre, Lahore, Pakistan.

A set of the prints were given to the Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea which are now part of the permanent collection. They are on display in the main hall.
