Rose Davies

Background

Graduating from Art College at the end of the 1970’s, I spent many years working with severely damaged and excluded people – drug and alcohol dependent, homeless – which has influenced me deeply and my art reflects my admiration for the beauty and resilience of the human body.

Artist’s Statement

I am Rosie Scribblah aka Rose Davies and I’m an artist, educator and blogger. I work directly from life, carrying a sketchbook at all times looking for any opportunity to have a scribble. Drawing underpins my art practice, working on the streets, in public, indoors and outdoors, bringing the practice of art directly to people who may never have been into a gallery or seen art being created. These drawings become the basis for my printmaking work.

I’ve been mostly doing linocuts over the past couple of years, often highlighted with chine collé. And I’ve been experimenting with the antique wooden letterpress at Swansea Print Workshop as well. I’ve introduced a small range, an economical way to start an art collection, called “Art On A Postcard”, inspired by Paul Peter Piech who made small, simple linocuts at affordable prices as well as larger editions.

I work from my studio in Swansea, where I live with my partner and our cats, Sparta Puss and William ChatNoir. My artwork has appeared in traditional and online galleries, in print, and on television. I also work internationally and have carried out residencies in the USA and Pakistan. I have a Masters in Adult Education from University of Wales, Swansea; a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from West Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education; and a Diploma in Art from Swansea Art College.
