Lino cutting and printing is a traditional relief printmaking method. ln this one day course you will cut a drawing or design into a block of lino using a range of cutting tools, ink the remaining surface and print onto paper and or fabric. Additional techniques like chine-colle (collaging) may be introduced to enrich the print produced.

This is a process that can easily be carried out at home. Although we use a press in the studio, it is possible to make prints at home using a hand burnishing technique to produce good quality prints.

We will look at:

Traditional lino and Japanese vinyl
How to transfer your design to the block
A full range of tools from professional to student gouges will be available for you to try out which is best for you.
What are the best ways to keep the tools sharp
How to use registration pins
How to set up the block for printing on our Columbian press
Using a baren to proof your print without a press.
What types of printing inks are available
What are the best papers to use
How to sign off and title a small edition of prints correctly

The workshop is open to all. Previous experience with printmaking is not a requirement. Tools and materials will be supplied

  • some graphic (black and white) drawings, photographs or source / reference material to help with your design
