Carole King is an experienced bookbinder and teacher who has a great range of book binding techniques and formats to choose from and will design bespoke workshops to suit your project or group. As well as the techniques below, you can make beautiful bespoke boxes and folders as well as 3D Tunnel and Star Books
Make a book you won’t find in the High Street. You could use it for sketching, journaling or scrapbooking. You will choose the cover design and number of pages and sew it all together to make something unique.
Memory Book – Coptic binding with envelopes and pockets| Memory books create a home for all your precious bits and pieces. Make yourself a book with envelopes and pocket, covered in beautiful handprinted paper. Bound in hard covers with decorative coptic binding.
Coptic binding with cloth covers | Books with coptic bindings lie flat on the table when open and so are great as sketchbooks. This looser style of binding will allow you to stick a few items onto the pages without stressing the spine. You can combine watercolour, white cartridge and lined papers to suit your needs in the same book and learn how to sew it all together.
Large Square sketch book with button| These larger format books bound with fabric and featuring a closure using ribbon or elastic, has been a popular book to make. Discover how to make your own bookcloth from a choice of fabrics and attach it to the hard covers.
Casebound A5 sketchbook | Make your own A5 sketch book or notebook (portrait orientation) containing around 120 writing or drawing surfaces of good quality, acid free cartridge. In just one day you will learn all necessary techniques to create a beautiful volume to your own design.
Open Spine Binding | Create a beautiful A5 (portrait format) book with hardback covers and a decorative stitched spine. Bind your book with a choice of papers and stitch the open spine with a combination of coloured tapes and threads.
Map fold books | Intriguing books that fold out into large square pages from pentagonal covers. Opens into a sculptural form that could be decorated with pictures, text or patterns
Sewn Boards Binding | Design and make your own sewn and glued hard cover book with a wrap around spine. This neat construction method creates a book that lays flat on the table when open, with a covered stitched spine.
Buttonhole Binding| This book exposes the signatures [pages] through the spine. The signatures can be decorated or left coloured before stitching the book together. The cover is hardback and features handprinted paper in a selection of designs.
Materials and tools provided but please bring anything, eg prints or papers, you would like to incorporate into your book.
