Japanese vinyl is a versatile modern substitute for traditional lino.  It is particularly suitable for making small prints, as it can accept very fine detail with great precision and without any risk of crumbling and cracking, which can happen when carving lino.

This vinyl is a very stable, long-lasting and reliable material, so even when cut up and re-assembled, its pieces retain their integrity for printing editions.

Many essential skills are transferrable between lino and vinyl so this workshop is suitable for beginners, even if they prefer to continue using lino afterwards.

There are many other ways of using vinyl which are not so easy with traditional lino, and some of  these may be used in this Mini Print workshop,  for example:

Finished plates can easily be cut up, re-arranged and re-assembled to make new images. This can lead to new ways of developing ideas.

Images can be printed from “jig-saw” plates: sections of the design which need different colours are cut out so they can be inked up separately. They are then put back together again and printed all at once.

Several pieces can be printed together and used as a background theme for further printing or painted detail.

Small plates could be used as motifs – modules for pattern printing.

 

This workshop is part of our MiniPrint Wales Project.

We aim to raise the profile of printmaking in Wales, and showcase the work of emerging and professional printmakers.

Funded by the Arts Council of Wales, our project will help develop the skills and expertise of amateur and professional printmakers, and introduce printmaking to new audiences through exceptional learning opportunities.

The programme will focus on the creation of mini prints, contained within a square area of 10cm x 10cm on a paper size measuring 18cm x 18cm.

Participants will have an opportunity to submit their work for exhibition at Mission Gallery, Swansea in October 2023, and all selected work will be published in a bilingual exhibition catalogue.
