The most wanted man during the year long Dylan Thomas celebrations generously agreed to open our exhibition at Oriel Y Bont. Jeff Towns has been in high demand for interviews, research for film and television projects and access to his extensive collection of Dylan Thomas related printed ephemera as well as a wide range of public engagements. He has an encyclopaedic background knowledge of all Dylan Thomas related material and this translates into highly entertaining and informative talks and seminars copiously illustrated with his amazing collection of books, prints and photographs.

Dr Ceri Thomas, Curator  of the Art Gallery & Museum: Oriel y Bont, Ty Crawshay gave us just a taster of Jeff's many activities and connections by way of  introduction, pointing us to the website http://www.dylans.com/ for an extensive list of Jeff's achievements.

Jeff opened the exhibition with an exposition of why and how Dylan was attracted by artists and how he valued their collaboration and friendship all his life. He went on to illustrate this through contemporary publications and even an original postcard that Dylan wrote from his newly established lodgings in London. He also illustrated how much his work continued to inspire artists from Ceri Richards who met him only once, shortly before he died in New York, to Peter Blake who has famously worked for over twenty years studying and illustrating Dylan's work. This short taster surely points the way to a more thorough engagement with this idea through a future appointment Jeff if he can fit it into his busy schedule.

INVITE FOR SPW3

Our two print collections form part of this exhibition of Dylan-inspired prints alongside rarely seen Ceri Richards originals in the private collection of Professor Tony Curtis who gave the opening address. As such, it is the largest exhibition of its kind with contributions from over 25 artists.

This is a lovely exhibition space right in the centre of Barry. Many thanks to the team there for doing such a good job with the hanging and marketing. They are also able to boast of the best canapes we have ever tastest at an opening!
