BOOKBINDING | Carole King is an experienced bookbinder and teacher who has worked with us on successful projects before. She has a great range of binding techniques and we can only sample a couple in the two day workshop.

You will explore the creative potential of the book form, examine book structure and their purposes. Carole will share her ideas for constructing books that tell a story. You will learn how to create sections that fold out, have moving parts and removable sections that involve the reader and engage your audience. You will explore and make a selection of books such as star books, tunnel books and books with pockets.

She will be covering Coptic binding as it allows a whole range of different papers to be bound together. This is one of the most useful and decorative and practical approaches for making artist books.

Memory Book – Coptic binding with envelopes and pockets

Memory books create a home for all your precious bits and pieces. Have you wondered where to keep that valentines card, bus ticket, that lock of hair from their first hair cut and memories of holidays and events. Make yourself a book with envelopes and pocket, covered in beautiful handprinted paper.Bound in hard covers with decorative coptic binding.

Each completed book will measure approximately 14.5 x 19.5 cm and contain three envelopes, plain white and coloured pages and a few pockets.
The two days will also allow you to explore one of the other formats Carole has to offer

Day 1

Coptic Binding

Coptic bound books are constructed with decorative chain stitching across the spine and open  flat when laid on a table. A little looser than a casebound book this allows  for the addition of photographs  or pictures to be added at a later date without stressing the spine.

Ready cut materials for making an approx A5 book (portrait orientation) containing around 120 writing or drawing surfaces of good quality acid free cartridge will be provided however if you wish to make a book with a different format or with different paper please let me know in advance.

We can add some coloured or patterned sheets to create dividers and we will be adding envelopes and pockets.

This book has hard covers.

A choice of hand pulled silkscreened papers will be available to use for the covers to add the final finishing touch but anyone who has prints that they wish to use, decorative papers or maybe wishes to collage a cover this would be great too.

Day 2

Working with Tunnel books

One of the simpler book forms is the concertina fold – this forms the basis of this workshop.Your chosen images and their size may dictate the finished format.

Please bring with you any collage materials that you would like to use-trial prints, favourite magazines, books destined for recycling.

Tunnel books

A tunnel book has the intimacy reminiscent of miniature theatres and kaleidoscopes.

Concertina folds of paper support collaged scenes to create a complete  image  viewed through a single window-a magical  world contained inside a book.

Each vertical section has windows cut through to reveal the next layer. A door or cover may be added to the front to add to the slow reveal of whats inside.

Tools

please bring a sharp craft knife- both ‘Stanley’ and a scalpel will be useful.

Ruler

Cutting board

Pencil

Scissors

Any drawing/painting materials that might be useful.
